MARC VIGOR-BROWN

Born in New Zealand, 1957, currently residing and working in Napier, NZ. Following study of Architecture at Auckland University I became immersed on a full-time basis with ceramic design. National success and recognition in the field of studio pottery was followed by an interest in the field of contemporary jewellery and precious metals.

My interest in jewellery was given incentive when looking for jewellery to purchase. I realized there were areas of design that had not been explored. Inspiration for my work comes by the magic and beauty that permeates the every-day worlds. I look at my immediate environment for imagery. Both urban-found objects as well as those found in nature play a part in my work.

Having worked in silver and gold for some fifteen years I now find my work has become more imaginative and it is easier to exploit my sources of inspiration. More often than not I transform what may be a mundane every-day object (or part thereof) and by manipulating it and producing the end product in silver and gold, I elevate it to the realm of wearable art or body ornament.

Texture, form, and design being important integral parts of my work, are highlighted by the use of patination. Firstly the surface of the piece is chemically blackened and then the highpoints are polished through to the gold or silver underneath. This gives the work a depth of texture and form, and becomes an integral part of the overall design.

I strive to ensure that my jewellery both looks and feels splendid. Ultimately I hope to bring to people, happiness, when they see and wear my jewellery.
