Based in Swannanoa, North Canterbury, Liz Petrie creates art that invites you to pause and connect. Painting since the early 1990s, her journey has taken her from vibrant acrylic landscapes and abstracts to her current passion — oil-painted animal portraits, with a special love for hares.

Using a careful layering technique, Liz captures more than just form; she brings out each creature’s spirit, whether it’s the wildness in a hare’s eyes, their enduring grace, or their quietly appealing faces. Her work encourages viewers to see beauty in unexpected places — even in animals sometimes labelled as pests.

Liz’s paintings have found homes across New Zealand and abroad. She exhibits regularly throughout the country and has earned recognition for her work, including an award for one of her hare portraits at Dartfield Art Week in 2018.
