Collection: Ion Brown

Ion Brown (1933-2021) was one of New Zealand's most respected artists, known for his masterful ability to capture the essence of New Zealand life - its people, landscapes, and the unique quality of light that defines our country.

Born and educated in Dunedin, Ion's artistic journey began early with classes at King Edward Technical College, followed by a five-year apprenticeship in engraving. After moving to Napier in 1963 to establish his own engraving business, painting classes with Peter Brown (former Elam University tutor) ignited a passion that would define his career. The friendship and mentorship that developed would last a lifetime.

In 1987, Ion was appointed Official Artist to the New Zealand Defence Force, a prestigious commission he held until 1997. During this decade, he traveled extensively to record military history across various fields of operation, including the 75th Anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. His monumental work "The Battle of Chunuk Bair," commissioned to mark New Zealand's Sesquicentennial, now hangs in Parliament Buildings - a testament to his significance in our nation's artistic heritage.

Throughout his 30+ year career, Ion remained passionate about painting New Zealanders going about their work and leisure, always seeking to capture that special light and atmosphere unique to our landscape. His work celebrates the everyday moments that make up New Zealand life, rendered with skill, warmth, and deep understanding of his subjects.
