Collection: Brent Redding
Brent Redding is a highly regarded Hawke’s Bay-based artist, known for his diverse body of work and long-standing dedication to teaching local art students. A self-taught painter, Brent works across oils, acrylics, and pastels. His approach is guided by the belief that the subject often dictates the painting’s direction, resulting in a rich variety of styles.
His works frequently explore pattern and design through recurring motifs like mannequins, apples, clocks, and planes—arranged in circular, symmetrical, or repeating compositions. These elements have infused his art with a unique rhythm that spans surrealism, futurism, and pop art. More recently, Brent has introduced these patterns into traditional landscapes and seascapes, creating what he describes as “disrupted reality.”
Since first exhibiting in 1985, Brent has held solo shows across New Zealand and Australia, including Napier, Tauranga, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Wellington. He has worked as a graphic artist, muralist, and continues to teach part-time. His accolades include winning the Norsewear Painting Award in 1994 and setting a record at the Cranford Hospice charity auction in 2004, where his painting "Red, White and Blues" raised $26,000.
