Collection: Susan Vorster

Susan Vorster was born in South Africa in 1970 into a family of natural creatives — writers, painters, dancers, and makers. Surrounded by art and expression from an early age, creativity became woven into her everyday life. Though largely self-taught, Susan studied art during her schooling and teacher training, where her love of art history deepened her skills and perspective.

Moving to New Zealand in 2009, Susan found endless inspiration in her new surroundings. The lush gardens and vibrant plant life reminded her of home, yet offered a fresh palette of colours and forms to explore. She became especially drawn to floral subjects, treating each bloom as a character with its own story, rhythm, and presence.

Susan’s practice centres on layering acrylics to reveal depth and light, capturing the complexity and richness of petals, leaves, and foliage. Through her brushwork, flowers become more than still life — they are moments of abundance, expressions of growth, and reminders of the beauty that surrounds us daily. Her work resonates with those who find joy in nature’s detail and who wish to bring that joy into their homes.
