Kokako (Sawdust Fired) 02

Warm golden tones catch the light against a deep charcoal-grey body in Sophie Lankovsky’s Kokako. Layered feather textures sweep across its rounded form, while a lifted head, distinctive wattles and gently raised tail give this hand-sculpted bird an alert presence.

The beauty of its sawdust-fired finish lies in the contrast between smoky dark areas and softly glowing earthy colour. Native birds of Aotearoa have been a strong feature of Sophie’s repertoire for 20 years, and this small sculpture reflects her enduring affection for their character.
