An upright cream tail and rounded reddish-brown body give Sophie Lankovsky’s Piwakawaka a lively silhouette. The beautiful raku-fired finish catches the light across rich, glossy colour, softly mottled cream and darker markings, highlighting the textured feather details.
Native birds of Aotearoa have been a strong feature of Sophie’s repertoire for 20 years. When she discovered the Japanese art of raku firing, she felt it was especially suited to bringing her birds to life. Here, the lustrous surface adds warmth and depth to this small hand-sculpted bird.
